A .com domain costs about €22 a year, a .eu costs about €9 a year, and a .com.mt costs about €94 a year in Malta. The best choice is usually the name your customers will remember and trust, not the cheapest extension.

Domain name prices in Malta
These prices are yearly registration costs and exclude VAT. A domain is the web address that people type to find your website, such as yourbusiness.com. You renew it each year to keep control of that address.
| Domain extension | Typical yearly price | Best fit |
|---|---|---|
| .com | About €22 a year | Most businesses that want a familiar international address |
| .eu | About €9 a year | Businesses that work across Europe and want a lower cost option |
| .com.mt | About €94 a year | Businesses that want to show a strong Malta connection |
Use our domain search with upfront prices to check a specific name and extension before you decide. The exact yearly price shows before you register it.
Which domain should a Maltese business choose?
For most small businesses, I would choose the .com if the name is available. People know it, remember it easily, and do not need an explanation when they see it on a van, invoice, menu, or business card.
A .com.mt makes sense if Malta is central to your trade and you want that signal in the address. It costs more, so I would not buy it just because it sounds local. Buy it because your customers, suppliers, or visitors will see value in it.
A .eu can work well for a business with European customers, but it does not carry the same immediate familiarity as .com. It is a good choice if your preferred .com is unavailable, or if the lower yearly cost matters and the name still reads well.
In our work, the more expensive problem is rarely the domain extension. It is a business using a long, awkward name because the owner waited too long to register a short one. Keep the name close to your trading name, easy to say aloud, and easy to type on a phone.
Register the domain in your own name
This is non negotiable. Your domain must be registered in your own name, with an email address that you control. A web designer can manage the technical work, but your business must remain the legal holder.
One common mess after a website changes hands is that nobody knows who controls the domain or has access to the renewal email. The website can be ready to move, but the old provider still controls the address. This can delay a launch, an email move, or both.
Keep the renewal contact details current. Also keep a record of where the domain is registered, the login details, and the payment method. A missed renewal can take down both your website and email.
What the domain price does and does not include
The registration price buys the domain name for one year. It does not automatically include a website, hosting, business email, logo, or search engine work.
If you need a new website as well, our transparent website price calculator gives an instant estimate for the build. A Starter website starts from €899 one time. Every website project then receives a fixed quote before work starts.
For WordPress sites, our hosting plans include email for up to five mailboxes. Managed Hosting and Fully Managed also include a free .com, .net, or .org domain. Essential Care does not include a domain. You can compare the cover and support on our managed WordPress hosting in Malta page.
If you run an online shop, do not assume that a domain includes shop email. WooCommerce hosting does not include email on its entry plan. Read our guide to starting a WooCommerce online shop in Malta before you choose the hosting and email arrangement.
Buy one domain or several?
Buy the main domain that you will use publicly first. If the budget allows, it can also be wise to register close versions that people may type by mistake, then point them to the main site.
Do not create separate websites on every extension. That splits your effort and can confuse customers. Pick one main address, use it consistently, and redirect any extra domains to it.
We also see businesses register a .com.mt and forget the .com. If another business later uses the .com with a similar name, customers can end up in the wrong place. The extra registration can be worthwhile for brand protection, but only after you have secured the main name.
My advice before you pay
Check that the name is available, check who will own it, and check the yearly renewal cost. Then register it before you print materials or build your social profiles around it.
Our transparent prices help you see the domain cost before you commit. If you have a business name in mind, send us the name and the extensions you are considering. We will tell you which address we would use as the main domain and what needs to be registered.
Frequently asked questions
Is a .com domain better than a .com.mt domain?
For most businesses, .com is the easiest address for customers to recognise and remember. Choose .com.mt if showing a Malta connection is central to your business.
How much does a .com.mt domain cost each year?
A .com.mt domain costs about €94 a year, excluding VAT. Check the domain search for the current price of your chosen name.
Do I own my domain name?
You must register the domain in your own name and use an email address you control. Your web provider can manage it for you.
Does domain registration include email and hosting?
No. A domain is only your web address. Hosting and email are separate services, although some hosting plans include them.
